The Eldheimar museum stands over and excavated building, which was buried by the lava flow while the volcanic eruption on the Heimaey island in 1973. You can find an another, partially excavated house just few steps from the main entrance to the museum. The ground floor of the museum is dedicated to the 1973 Eldfell eruption. In the second floor you can find an part dedicated to the (until nowdays) the youngest island in the world – Surtsey (‘born’ in 1973).
This museum is definitely a worth visit at least if you are on the island. But i you are interested in more than just icelandic waterfalls, just the museum is very worth to make the trip from the Icelandic mainland to Heimaey island. You can easily spend several hours here without getting bored.

You can find Eldheimar museum at the very end of the town, just under the Eldfell volcanic cone. It is about 25 minutes to go from the harbor.
